How Long Does it Take to Remove Birmingham Squirrels from a Building

Alabama squirrels are amazing creatures. You sit and watch them jump from the top of a complex to one single branch on a tree with ease. They run up and down like that is their home, and it is. They are cute and interesting, from afar. However, when they get in your house they are no longer cute anymore. They can cause a significant amount of damage to the home and injury to the inhabitants if they feel threatened.

Their Favorite Place
When it comes to where a Birmingham squirrel likes to hide, just look up. They hide in the warmest part of the house, and not the part that is warmed through the air vents and such but where they heat rises to, the attic. There are a few reasons why the attic is the best place, they have the most entry points, they are away from other inhabitants such as humans and pets, and it’s warm and quiet. Plus an attic is reminiscent of a tree, in which they get into and create a home. Plus it’s one of the most desirable places second to a tree, for new moms.

Damage that they Cause
When they have a litter of babies (which they have two per year) these babies will stay in your atticfor about six weeks until they are pretty much full-grown. During that time they are doing everything in the attic that they would be doing outside such as using it as their bathroom. They also make a decent amount of noise as active as they are. Plus, if you have watched them outside they like to chew on branches to wear down their teeth. If they can’t do that outside, the easily do that in your home on wood planks, flooring, vents, pipes, wires etc. All of this can lead to water damage and even an electrical fire if they expose the wires. Droppings from Alabama squirrels can also bring disease to those in the home and leave a smell. That smell, and their pheromones will attract other squirrels as well as raccoons, neither of which you want in the home.

Removing Them
When it comes to removing Birmingham squirrels from the house you have to consider how many you have. Generally, there can be anywhere from 1-8 gray squirrels or up to 12 flying squirrels in the attic area however there can be a lot more depending on the size of the area they are inhabiting as well. The larger the area, the more you could have. Removing them is necessary and you must ensure that you have removed all of them. You can either do so with exterior traps or a one-way door. They go out to get food multiple times per day and a door allowing them out and not back in will do the trick. It could take a few days for them to be removed (all of them) especially if there are babies in there. But because they are out and about multiple times per day it could take less time than you think, 24-48 hours. Once you know they are all gone seal up the hole.
