Fastest Way to Get Rid of Birmingham Bats

Bats are nocturnal animals and by themselves harmless. However, having bats in your home or attic is inviting problems. Their urine and droppings called guano can corrode wood and other building materials. They are also a health risk and cause histoplasmosis, flu like problem in humans when inhaled. Attempting to remove bats by trapping or poisoning is not humane and not recommended. Birmingham bats can also bite and cause rabies. Bat removal is best left to experts, who can plan and get rid of them. Identifying the species of bat is also important. This is required because birthing and hibernating seasons may sometimes vary. Getting rid of bats is done by the following two important steps.

Identifying their location and hiding place
The first step for Alabama bat removal is finding the exact place where they hide. Bat smell and droppings will help you locate them. The most common places used by bats are attics, unused rooms, porch connect, pergolas in the terrace, backyard where old furniture and other things are stored etc.

Sealing and cleaning the area
Bats being nocturnal creatures leave their shelter in search for food at night. Once they leave all entry points must be sealed leaving one entry point which is sealed by one way exclusion. This is in case some bat remains. Sealing is done using hardboards, netting material, steel wool, foam rubber etc. Check and seal even small holes in walls or roofs. 1 or 1.5” hole is sufficient for a bat to enter. The area must then be cleaned thoroughly. Naphthalene balls and spraying of phenol deter entry of Birmingham bats. The smell is unpleasant for bats.

Bat exclusion is always done at night. The important reasons for doing this is
• Bats are nocturnal creatures and when they fly out at night to hunt food the entry/exit holes become apparent.
• Visibility of structures is better at night. Daytime has bright light and shadows tend to hide the small holes in walls. A head lamp used directly on structures highlights every crack and hole making it easy to seal them.
• The one way exclusion door also can be monitored easily to see that it functions well. It is also simple to check that there are no other exits for bats and confirm that all the bats have gone out.
Wildlife control organisations often stress on preventive methods to avoid harm to man and animals. Precautionary measures must be taken to prevent entry of Alabama bats. They include inspection of chimney caps, window screens and draft guards beneath doors and immediately repairing any damage to them. Holes, cracks in walls must be repaired.

Bats do not like low temperature and hence attics can be kept cool
Other simple home methods include hanging of mirrors, aluminium foils. These disturb bats when lights are reflected and cause them to fly away. Fragrance of eucalyptus leaves, powdered cinnamon etc also are known to inhibit entry of Birmingham bats. Areas where bats resided must also be thoroughly cleaned. Checking for bat stains is essential because the familiar smell may cause bats to re visit.
